Curtis Colegrave: Liberal Studies

Curtis Colegrave graduated from the Liberal Studies program in 2007. After travelling for a few months through Southeast Asia, he started working as an English language teacher in Seoul, Korea. He sent us this update in 2012.

Nancy completed the Liberal Studies major through our partnership program at North Island College in Courtenay, and attended the Nanaimo campus to complete her major in Anthropology. She then went on to the MA program in Integrated Studies at Athabasca University, where, as part of a class project, she was asked to define what for her were the essential qualities of her education in Liberal Studies.

In 1995, Geraldine McConkey graduated with distinction in Liberal Studies as part of the last cohort to receive their BAs under the auspices of VIU’s initial partnership with the University of Victoria . Since then she has taken teacher training and written a lot of poetry, and now works for Simon Fraser University.

Gary took Liberal Studies through our partnership program with North Island College, and then completed a BEd at VIU. After teaching for a couple of years he then went on to complete a Master of Counselling degree. He now works in Campbell River, BC as a counsellor in private practice and as a counsellor in an alternate school.

Perry Bulwer: Liberal Studies and Modern Literature January 31, 2022 - 11:04am

Perry graduated in 1996, and, after first trying out the possibility of a career in education at the K-12 level, he settled on law as a vehicle for his strong commitment to social justice. He was worked in the downtown eastside area of Vancouver with sex-trade workers and others requiring legal help. Perry shared his experiences in the world of work with recent graduates as the keynote speaker at our Spring Conference in 2004.

Linda Horner found herself over 50 years old and unemployed because continuing in her chosen field required a degree. Having previously completed more than two years of university study, she returned to VIU to take a Liberal Studies major, including a set of courses put on in Prague by Liberal Studies Abroad.

Nancy Greene completed the Liberal Studies BA through our partnership program at North Island College. After graduating, she began a career she pursued her work in anthropology, and was instrumental in the discovery and investigation of an important First Nations fishing weir on Vancouver Island.

Duncan Pike: Liberal Studies and Physical Education

Since graduating VIU with a BA in Liberal Studies and Physical Education in 2004 Duncan has completed an MSc. in Kinesiology at Lakehead University and is now president of his own company, Sport Performance Specialists. He is the world's leading expert in the theory of Visual Feedback, and delivers coaching and coach training through Sport Performance Specialists, and subsidiary SPS Power Skating, in addition to designing and selling sport Lab™ turnkey visual feedback systems.
