    Synopsis

    LBST 420 is an examination of important works of Western literature, philosophy, social science, science, art and music from the late 19th into the 21st Centuries. Through seminar discussion of key works by important modern and postmodern thinkers, we will investigate issues revealing radical shifts towards contemporary cultural perspectives, including individual alienation, the problem of technology, moral relativism, and modernity and its discontents.

    The core courses in Liberal Studies involve the study of a contributions made to the Western tradition from a number of disciplines, including art, music, philosophy, literature, science, and history. But the goal of the Liberal Studies Program is not to produce artists, musicians, philosophers, literary critics, scientists, or historians. Instead, it is designed to help you respond intelligently to the whole range of human intellectual endeavour.

    Program Overview For Students Entering the Major or Minor November 9, 2023 - 2:42pm

    Goals of the Program

    The normal, though not the only, entry-point to the Liberal Studies major and minor is LBST 250, which may also be taken as LBST 350. This is the first in a series of three 6-credit, semester-long, multidisciplinary core courses which, together with a related series of 3-credit companion courses, constitute the normal program of study for the BA Major in Liberal Studies offered by Vancouver Island University.

    The North Island College/Vancouver Island University partnership program in Liberal Studies, in existence since 1996, provides students with the opportunity to complete an interdisciplinary BA degree in the Comox Valley. Many students enter at third year, having completed 54 credits of university-transferable courses. However, some courses can be taken with only 24 credits completed, and part-time options are possible.

    North Island College and Vancouver Island University formed in 1996 a partnership to offer the VIU Liberal Studies BA at the Comox Valley Campus. Students are admitted to, and upon completion receive a credential from, Vancouver Island University , but take classes at North Island College.

    GLST 200  (3)  Global Economic Issues

    An introduction to the institutions, concepts and theories of micro- and macro-economics within a global context. Topics include issues related to trade, market forces and their relationship to growth and development; and a broad overview of global inequalities with possible solutions. (3:0:0)

    Joining a student club is one of the many ways to get involved on campus. Student club experiences can enhance your education here at VIU, and can help you develop your career once you complete your degree. Some of these clubs also enable you to contribute to making positive change in the world around you. Global Studies is a multidisciplinary program and each student can chart their own unique path within the program. Listed below are some of the clubs you can get involved in. We have also noted how they might relate to the respective Global Studies areas of specialization.

    Overview

    The Global Studies internship program is an excellent opportunity for students to experience work in an international environment. Students have pursued internships in places as far flung as Geneva, India, Belize, Uganda and Brazil. Local internships in Nanaimo, and internships in other parts of BC and Canada are also an option for students.
