Ana Maria Donat

Ana Maria Donat was born in Madrid, Spain and has also lived in the Caribbean, across Canada, and in China. Ana Maria's love for languages and cultures brought her to her learning of foreign languages and to the topics that inform her degrees. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She has two Master's degrees, one in Art History from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and one in Spanish Language and Spanish and Latin American Literature from the University of Ottawa. She completed her PhD in Spanish Language and Literatures at L'Université Laval in 2005.

She taught Spanish Language, Spanish Literature and Culture, and European Art History at the University of Ottawa, at Dalhousie University, and at Saint Mary's University. She was a visiting professor at the Central University of Beijing and at Nankai University in China from 1994 through 1996.

Ana Maria has taught Spanish Language, Literature, and Culture at Vancouver Island University since 1997. She served as Chair of the Modern Languages Department from 1997 to 2005. She started the Spanish Club in 1998 and is the Club's Faculty sponsor, Honorary President, and advisor. The Spanish Club is one of the most popular on campus, and its membership increases every year. The Club sponsors movie nights, dinner dances, cooking classes, conversation classes, salsa nights, and more.

Ana Maria took a year of sabbatical in Spain (2006/07), where she continued with her research in European art and Spanish theatre for an upcoming book on the subjects.

Ana Maria is a member of the Canadian Association of Hispanists, the International Association of Hispanists, the Modern Languages Association, the Standing Committee on Languages Articulation, the Alexandro Malaspina Research Centre, and VIU's Teaching and Learning Centre. She has participated as a speaker at congresses, conferences, and seminars organized by these associations and others such as the Association of Asian Hispanists, with whom she presented at a Congress in Seoul, Korea in 1997.
