Attendance and the "No Show" Policy

A student's attendance on the first day of class is expected and the "No Show" policy has been established to remove a student from a class if they do not attend the first day. It is often misunderstood, so we have tried to explain it in detail here to ensure instructors have the ability to enforce it promptly. Attendance beyond the first day of class can also be an issue that you will want to address, and there are policies that will assist you in dealing with those as well.

Purposes of a Course Outline/Syllabus November 7, 2018 - 10:19am

Course outlines/syllabi seem to vary in two fundamental areas—the apparent reason for writing the course outlines and the material that it contains. The purpose of the course outlines should drive the decision as to what content to include (Parkes & Harris, 2002).

Three major purposes that a course outlines should serve are described by Parkes and Harris:

  • Course outlines as a contract
  • Course outlines as a permanent record
  • Course outlines as a learning tool
