VIU Model UN | November 6, 2023 - 4:29pm |
VIU MUN is a learning conference where university and high school delegates simulate how the United Nations attempts to resolve a major international dispute. Delegates learn about the values and interests of countries from around the world and test the capacity of the United Nations to find common ground. VIU MUN is a friendly environment for students to practice public speaking, debating, collaborative problem-solving, and engage in the art of diplomacy. |

Spontaneous Speech | December 29, 2023 - 11:19am |
Phonetic research investigates how speakers and listeners use speech to convey messages. The speech produced to encode a particular message can vary wildly. Understanding and explaining the phonetic variability embodied in this example is one of the main motivations for this Element. Why and how do speakers produce this variability and how does it impact listeners? This Element focuses on spontaneous speech and its relationship with phonetic research. |

The role of phonology-to-orthography consistency in predicting the degree of pupil dilation induced in processing reduced and unreduced speech | December 29, 2023 - 11:17am |
The relationship between the ways in which words are pronounced and spelled has been shown to affect spoken word processing and a consistent relationship between pronunciation and spelling has been reported as a possible cause of unreduced pronunciations being easier to process than reduced counterparts although reduced pronunciations occur more frequently. In the present study, we investigate the effect of pronunciation-to-spelling consistency for reduced and unreduced pronunciations in L1 and L2 listeners of a logographic language. |

Lab | December 28, 2023 - 11:35pm |
Our overarching agenda is for VIU to become an interdisciplinary research hub for the Central Vancouver Island region. Our eye-tracking equipment enables VIU to provide accessible infrastructure and systems for researchers and students to undertake scholarship and research activities without needing to coordinate with and travel to universities in the provincial capital of Victoria or on the mainland. |

We are particularly interested in the following aspects of language and experimental methods to understand how sounds or words are represented/processed in the mind. Specifically, how different types of variables are integrated into the representation/processing of sounds or words and how these factors inhibit or facilitate speech communication. |
