The VIU Graphic Design Program can help!
Although many students achieve their goals by attending a 2-year diploma, you may want to continue on to a four-year school for a bachelor’s degree. The Graphic Design Program at VIU is structured to accept third-year transfer students, and we’re pleased to offer those with a graphic design diploma a seat as a third-year student at VIU.
While there may be some classes that don’t transfer exactly, we make every effort to accept all earned credits, and we’re happy to work you to get you into our program as easily as possible.
Our upper-level courses cover topics such as:
- Art Direction
- Project Management
- Graphic Design Process & Principles
- Advanced Typography
- Illustration
- Sketching & Concept Ideation
- Design Thinking
- User Interface/User Experience Design
- Presentation Design & Public Speaking
- Publishing Design for Traditional & Digital Media
- Package Design
- Information & Experiential Design
- Logo, Branding & Identity Design
If you’re accepted as an upper-level transfer student, you’ll be eligible to enrol in all 300-level design courses, as well as electives of your choosing. For more information about the program, have a look at our graphic design offerings and descriptions here.
So, how do you apply?
It's easy! First, you need to apply to Vancouver Island University. You can find more information on our General admission requirements page.
Bachelor of Design in Graphic Design applicants will also need to apply on SlideRoom and submit the following documentation:
- A portfolio of your best work submitted to Slideroom in PDF, JPEG, or TIFF formats, or provide links to your work.
- A 100-300 word written statement on reasons and goals for seeking enrolment in the program
- A résumé including two reference letters
Once your applications to both VIU and SlideRoom are complete, we will review your documents and contact you directly regarding your application.
What our Transfer students are saying
"Transitioning to VIU was a seamless experience from one school to another. All my courses provided me with a positive challenge that helped further my skills that I had previously developed, and I was able to build strong connections with my classmates and professors who are always encouraging me to put in 110% effort into my work."
