African Scrapbook:
Paintings by Maureen G. Marshall
The View Gallery presents African Scrapbook: Paintings by Maureen G. Marshall (October 8-November 13, 2015). A series of twenty-nine paintings by Maureen G. Marshall, based on the “sketches, masks, carvings, and memories of her travel experiences.” (African Scrapbook: Maureen G. Marshall, 2014). The works engage in the postcolonial discourse through the mixing of past/present, colour/form, self/other, African/European themes in their making, and in their final appearance. Marshall studied anthropology and art at UC Berkeley, and has long remained interested in the intellectual and emotive power of African carvings.
