About Spanish	February 8, 2022 - 10:13am	Alejandro Malaspina, after whom this University was named, was a Captain of the Spanish Navy who came to Vancouver Island in 1791 when he was commissioned by the King of Spain to search for a Northwest Passage. Perhaps it is his spirit that has encouraged the growth of our thriving Spanish department.

Statement of Purpose	June 27, 2024 - 10:22am	The primary objectives of the Department of History are to provide students with an enriched and comprehensive understanding of the past, while introducing them to the diverse approaches and methodologies employed by the discipline. The Department fosters critical thinking and oral and written communication skills that enhance students’ capacity for independent intellectual inquiry and provide essential preparation for the pursuit of graduate studies in History and for many other professions and careers.
