E. J. Hughes: The Complexities of Biography

Jane Cole, Department of Art and Design, will open the Arts and Humanities 2009-2010 Colloquium series with a presentation on "E. J. Hughes: the Complexities of Biography," Friday, September 25, 2009, at 10 am in the Boardroom on the fifth floor of the Library.
Jane, who curated the Nanaimo Art Gallery's highly successful 2009 summer exhibition, "E.J. Hughes: the Man and his Art," and authored the companion book by the same name, will discuss some of the conceptual and methodological challenges she experienced in researching and writing about the artist and the art work that he produced. Cole, who knew Hughes personally and is an artist and art historian herself, offers a unique perspective on this great Canadian artist.

Dr Hope Leith and Dr Ana Maria Donat from the Modern Languages Department will give a joint presentation on Denys Arcand and Pedro Almodóvar. These two film makers have succeeded in reaching a global audience with their work while remaining firmly grounded in their specific cultural, historical and linguistic contexts of Quebec and Spain, respectively.
