INDG 101  (6)  Exploring Indigenous Identities

A team-taught learning community examining the formation and maintenance of Canadian indigenous identities in both historical and contemporary times. In lectures and small seminars students explore the diversity of indigenous identities and the internal and external forces that shape their construction. A resident elder supports all lectures and seminars. (3:3:0)

Prerequisite: Min. "C" in English 12.

Most British Columbia colleges and universities offer one or more Creative Writing courses which are equivalent to VIU's courses. Some institutions offer two-levels of Creative Writing and/or Journalism courses; students from these institutions may be eligible to enter our degree program at the third-year level.

Althea Thauberger, born in 1970 in Saskatoon, completed a BFA in Photography at Concordia University and a MFA in Visual Art at University of Victoria. Althea began her art practice working in photography, but more recently she has been working in film and video. In 2004, she was short-listed for the Sobey Art Award, a major award for young Canadian artists. Since 2006, Althea has been working and living in Vancouver and Berlin. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in North America, Europe, and Asia.

We are surrounded by powerful images and ideas, in both everyday objects and creative visual statements, which help us live, work, understand, experience and learn.

Vancouver Island University’s Department of Art and Design is pleased to announce our Visiting Artist and Designer Series.  At various times throughout the academic year, artists visit the campus to give public presentations on their work.  The visiting artist talks are free of charge and members of the University community and public are encouraged to attend.  The Visiting Artist and Designer Series is a wonderful opportunity to view the work of contemporary artists working in a variety of media--from drawing and painting, sculpture and installation, to video and stop-motion animation--and

Interview Sessions

Prospective students must meet with the Art Department Selection Committee. Students will be advised of the status of their application as soon as possible following their interview with the Selection Committee. For interview dates, please contact the Admissions office, 250.740.6400. Applied program applicants must seek permission from the instructor to take part-time courses and may be required to submit a portfolio for assessment.

European Tour: Art & Culture August 14, 2016 - 12:40pm

The Art department at VIU offers an exciting three week opportunity to travel through Europe in late April and early May of selected years. These trips are organized by Jane Cole, Professor of studio and art history, with assistance from the Study Abroad Program at VIU. A travel company is hired to arrange tour logistics.
